Watercolour on paper, 1928. Ravilious has often
been hailed as quintessentially an ‘English’ artist – a difficult word
to define. But the landscapes of England are criss-crossed by deep
lanes, by holly hedges and ‘mountains green’, the colours of our
landscapes contain browns and greys, and our skies are often overcast.
This is a rare and exceptional painting, with all the elements for which
Ravilious is justly loved.
