Linocut 1929, printed from five blocks: yellow, cobalt blue, and black. This exceptional print is based on sketches Power made in 1927 of the staircase at Russell Square Underground Station, London. Power, of course, trained as an architect before studying at the Grosvenor School of Art. Here he explores with fascinated detail, both the architectonic boldness of the staircase, but also the reflected light as, in geometric symmetry, it alternately illuminates and casts shadows on the walls of the stairwell.
